'50/50': The Reviews Are In

Most critics think the comedy about cancer proves anything can be funny.
By Eric Ditzian

When Will Reiser first found out he had cancer, he and his comedy-writer buddies (including Seth Rogen and "Pineapple Express" scribe Evan Goldberg) would jokingly wonder if Reiser's disease would bring them all a Make-a-Wish opportunity to hang with Led Zeppelin.

That rock-and-roll dream never came true, but Reiser's battle with, and eventual remission from, cancer did gift them all with one thing: "50/50," a comedy (out now) that is drawing rave reviews from critics and is being discussed as a possible contender come awards season. Though not all reviewers have found it easy to find yuks in a deadly serious topic, far more point to the film as an example that nothing is out of bounds when it comes to art and comedy; handled deftly, anything can lead to laughter and learning.

The Story
"Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a nice guy with a great job at a Seattle NPR station, a promising relationship with up-and-coming artist Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard), a best-friend-since-high-school named Kyle (Seth Rogen) to hang with -- and, as he learns to his horror in a doctor's office, cancer. ... Also woven deftly into the mixture is Anna Kendrick as a young (very young) therapist assigned to work with Adam; [Anjelica] Huston as the kind of mother who explains 'I want you to know that I smothered him because I love him' to anyone who will listen. ... It's not a perfect movie, but it doesn't matter. '50/50' takes on a bold subject and makes us laugh and cry. I thought I didn't want to see a cancer comedy; I was wrong." -- Moira McDonald, The Seattle Times

The Laughs
"Scenes where the pals trash a piece of once-important memorabilia in a backyard rampage and the after-effects of pot-laden cookies scored at the chemotherapy clinic show loopily grinning Gordon-Levitt at his best. Kudos to [director Jonathan] Levine for not letting Rogen's very funny comedic bits overshadow the proceedings. The actor dials it down ever so slightly and isn't afraid to be the butt of jokes -- watch for Gordon-Levitt's spot-on Rogen impersonation. The suggestion a bald head and a cancer diagnosis could be the ultimate pickup leverage leads Adam and Kyle into funny territory. But the hilarity turns with the exploration of deeper relationships as Adam finds new friends among the genial stoners of all ages at the chemo clinic." -- Linda Barnard, Toronto Star

The Writing
"[Reiser] draws on his personal battle with a rare form of that disease. His success rate in the delicate balance between comedy and the profound devastation of such an illness is much greater than 50/50, but the film is not without its tonal lapses. ... Reiser has written his characters with an indelible sweetness and vulnerability, which allows the cast to deliver performances with some depth. So a situation such as Kyle insisting that Adam and he should cruise girls at a bar looking for sympathy lays -- Cruisin' with the Big C as it were -- comes off as quite funny as does Adam's first chemo session where he ingests weed-laced sweets created by a fellow patient's wife and floats out of the hospital afterwards." -- Kirk Honeycutt, The Hollywood Reporter

The Dissenters
"In the pantheon of tastelessness designed to make you laugh at diarrhea, menstruation, masturbation, yeast infections, fellatio and worse, you can now add a stupid horror called '50/50.' Artificial, irresponsible, filthy and forgettable, it knocks itself cross-eyed trying to make you roar with laughter at chemotherapy, with the nauseating Seth Rogen milking most of the yuks. But a stoner comedy about cancer? I don't think so." -- Rex Reed, The New York Observer

The Final Word
"The reason '50/50' works is it's not trying to force us into any particular emotion. It fits in the emerging category of sad-man comedies such as 'Up in the Air' and 'Crazy, Stupid Love,' telling its downbeat tale with tenderness, sincerity and warmth. '50/50' isn't a cancer buddy comedy or a male weepie but a message movie. The message is that you can tackle pretty much any subject matter and tell a story any way you want to onscreen as long as it's absorbing." -- Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune

Rihanna Demands 2 A.M. Bikini Wax & May Have "Found Love" With Her Video Co-Star Dudley O'Shaughnessy

It must be nice to be Rihanna.  If you decide you want a bikini wax at 2am so you can look your best for a video shoot that morning....you can get it! And if you are crushing on a a model/boxer whom you want for a video shoot, you can get him too!  Find out about Rihanna getting her ish inside..

In a hilarious story that only happens to rich and famous divas, Rihanna demanded a bikini wax EARLY one morning before her "We Found Love" video shoot.

Before she got scolded in the cornfields for going topless, Rihanna arrived at her Belfast hotel very late and decided she need a "touch up" before the cornfield shoot.

That sent her assistants into a tizzy as they had to find a local directory and try to entice several beauticians to come over to Rihanna's hotel room in the wee hours of the morning.  Luckily, they found one willing to get out of bed to wax her at 2am.

And word has it that bra tops weren't the only things popping off at the "We Found Love" shoot.  Sources are saying that RiRi has a major crush on her video co-star boxer/model Dudley O'Shaughnessy.

A source on the video shoot in Northern Ireland told the Sun UK,

"Rihanna was making no secret that she fancied the pants off Dudley. They hit it off straight away.  She had seen his modelling shots and other pictures when he was a boxer."

The source continued,

"Rihanna took every opportunity to get close to him and at one point she was sitting in his lap during a break from filming.  She's very tactile anyway, but this was something else."

The 21-year-old 6ft light-middleweight also dyed his hair blond for the video....which folks on the interwebz say made him look a lot like.....Chris Brown.

Check out more pics of the yummy boxer here:

Jay-Z Throws A Carnival For College Kids' Scholarships

Jay's foundation set up the Ferris wheel in New York on Thursday to raise funds for university-bound students' scholarships.

NEW YORK — On Thursday night, Jay-Z hosted a carnival at the Hudson River Park pier for his Shawn Carter Foundation. But it wasn't all Ferris wheels and funnel cakes — unfortunately Momofuku doesn't make those. The event was called Making the Ordinary Extraordinary, and it sought to raise funds for college scholarships.

MTV News caught up with Mr. Carter at the event, where he said the evening was about having fun while raising money for a good cause. Jay said two of the worst things in life are a waste of talent and a person who applies him- or herself but is unable to advance due to financial hardship. He hoped this foundation would help ease such burdens and assist people in recognizing their potential.

"Just providing opportunity and seeing what people do with that opportunity. If you want to go further and you want to further your education, just giving someone that extra little push [so] that maybe you'll turn out to be someone special," Jay said.

Jay and his mother, Gloria Carter, started the foundation in 2002 to help those facing socioeconomic difficulties further their education at institutions of higher learning. The foundation started with one student earning a full ride through college and grew to offer 50 scholarships to students in 50 different states annually from 2003 to 2005. More than 750 students have been awarded scholarships totaling in excess of $1.1 million, and nearly 500 kids have taken part in the foundation's college tours — some even rode the bus with Jay's mom.

"My mom has been running this for a number of years," said Jay. "My mom gets on the bus and takes the kids and takes them to their orientations and she's been riding around the college. It's a real grassroots thing that she's been doing on her own, and I'm just really trying to help her expand it so we can help more people. It started out as a Brooklyn thing, and then it started as a New York thing, and now hopefully we can take it to a worldwide thing."

The Office, "The Incentive": Best Lines of the Night

Andy Bernard's stepping up in his role as the Dunder Mifflin regional manager in this week's episode of The Office, and he's adopting some pretty unusual methods to motivate his team. While he's still a bit unsure of himself, he's nevertheless dedicated to doing what's best for his team, and I'm loving the extremes to which he's willing to go to keep them happy.

When his incentive program fails to inspire his employees, Andy gets a bit carried away making promises he doesn't really want to keep. It spins so far out of control that he agrees to get a tattoo on his butt! He freaks out a bit in the process, but the Dunder Mifflin gang surprises him with a heartwarming choice for his tattoo - a miniature Nard-dog! To find out some of my favorite quotes from Nard-dog, plus the best lines from the other Dunder Mifflin employees, just keep reading

SPOTTED: First Lady Michelle Obama Tries To Go Undercover At TARGET In VA!

Could you imagine doing your usual Target run and seeing First Lady Michelle Obama in your checkout line?!  She was spotted looking incognito today in Alexandria, VA while shopping it up.

Pics inside...

Looks like Mrs. Obama's security threw on their street clothes to blend in because no suits with earbuds were spotted in the store.

Right outside of D.C. in Alexandria, VA, FLOTUS decided to grab a few things for 30-40 minutes with her assistant at the local Target.  She was dressed in a floral button down, black pants, a Nike baseball cap, and shades.  But of course, she was still somewhat noticeable.  The Associated Press reported that Secret Service arrived 30 minutes before her and blended with the other customers.  The only person who recognized the First Lady was her cashier!

In case you're wondering if it was really her, the White House confirmed it this afternoon saying,

"It is not uncommon for the First Lady to slip out to run an errand, eat at a local restaurant or otherwise enjoy the city outside the White House gates," said Kristina Schake, communications director for the First Lady.

CBS News reports the pics were snapped by an Associated Press photographer who says he was tipped off that she would be there.

Sometimes you just want to do things yourself and without all the hoopla...

"Mother of Hip Hop" Sylvia Robinson Dies At 75, Hip Hop Community Reacts

Sylvia Robinson, a legend in the hip-hop community, died this morning of congestive heart failure at Meadowlands Hospital in Secaucus, New Jersey.  She was 75 and deemed the "Mother of Hip Hop."

The reactions of the hip hop community inside...

Sylvia Robinson made her mark on the hip hop industry in producing the first rap song in history to hit the mainstream airwaves, "Rapper's Delight" by Sugar Hill Gang.

Women making big moves in the game was not as prominent an occurrence at the beginning as it is now.  And being called the "Mother of Hip Hop" was fitting for the legend.

She was a singer (best known for her single "Pillow Talk"), producer, and co-founder of the Sugar Hill Records, along with her husband.  She helped formed the Sugar Hill Gang and produced their most notable single.  She's also one of the first to use "sampling", as "Rapper's Delight" used the breakdown of "Good Times" by Chic.

Sylvia also produced Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five's "The Message."

Branding and hip-hop guru Steve Stoute spoke highly of Sylvia Robinson in his new book The Tanning of America.  And he said to TheYBF.com this afternoon about her death:

"I hope the world remembers Sylvia Robinson as a pioneer and innovator that, because of her contribution to society, a culture was born and a generation was raised."

The Hip Hop community is pouring out their condolences on Twitter as well.

Questlove: Sylvia Robinson RIP: the woman who funded "Rappers Delight" & "The Message" thank you

Holly Robinson Peete: #RIP Sylvia Robinson of Sugar Hill Records Rap #entrepreneur #pioneer

Her grandson, Darnell Robinson, previously appeared on MTV's "Super Sweet 16" and brought Rihanna as his date to his party.  He tweeted: My grandmother is the #9 trending topic in the world. Sylvia Robinson will never be forgotten. I love you grandma.

Lily Collins Is Our New Class' 'Ass-Kicking Girl Next Door'

With 'Mortal Instruments' and 'Snow White' still to come, the badass-yet-relatable actress is destined for mega-fame.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Kara Warner

Lily Collins
Photo: MTV News

We called it way back in January: Lily Collins was an actress to watch in 2011.

At that point, her career was just heating up following a turn as Sandra Bullock's daughter in "The Blind Side." An impressive series of castings in high-profile films followed: "Priest," "Abduction" opposite Taylor Lautner and an adaptation of the best-selling YA series "The Mortal Instruments." A few months later, she landed the role of Snow White in Relativity Media's Julia Roberts-starring take on the fairy tale.

Collins is making good on our predictions, which is why we've selected her as part of our New Class — a collection of young talent about to rise to the top of Hollywood, including her "Mortal Instruments" co-star Jamie Campbell Bower. With her badass-yet-relatable roles, Collins is our New Class' "Ass-Kicking Girl Next Door."

Though she's had all of 2011 to get used to the spotlight, the whole celebrity thing continues to feel odd.

"It feels very surreal," she told us at the "Abduction" red carpet. "It's weird getting out of a car and people are saying my name. It's still a weird concept to me."

Give her time. Collins told us she'd like to model her career after Keira Knightley, Kate Winslet or Meryl Streep. "I like that none of them have stuck themselves in a box," she said. "They've done all sorts of roles — comedic, dramatic, they've gone from indies to big motion pictures. I love their choices."

And she's a fan of the New Class itself, which includes not only Bower, but Emma Watson, Josh Hutcherson, Julianne Hough and Nina Dobrev.

"It's an honor to be placed in the New Class of actors," Collins said. "I'm doing what I love, and I'm having the best time."

Julianne Hough Is Our New Class' 'Triple Threat'

'Footloose' actress tells MTV News she emulates Reese Witherspoon.
By Kara Warner

Julianne Hough
Photo: Denise Truscello/ WireImage

Julianne Hough's résumé is so chock-full of accomplishments, it doesn't seem possible that one person could pack so much into 23 short years on the planet. In other words, unless you've been living under a rock, you've seen or heard the petite, talented entertainment dynamo on TV, the big screen or radio.

If you're a "Dancing With the Stars" fan, you know Hough from the fancy footwork she demonstrated as a professional dancer for four seasons, two of which she won with partners Helio Castroneves (in season four) and Apolo Ohno (in season five). If you're a country music fan, you might have noticed the Utah native being named the Top New Female Vocalist and Top New Artist at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2009.

Most recently, Hough has been dipping her toes into the world of movie acting. Her first big role was in 2010's "Burlesque" alongside Cher and Christina Aguilera, followed by a starring role in this fall's highly anticipated reboot of "Footloose."

Perhaps it's now easy to see why Hough has been named "Most Likely to be a Triple Threat" in MTV Movies' New Class. She can do it all, and by the look and sound of it, she's just getting started with an eventful career.

MTV News recently caught up with the superstar-in-the-making to see how she's juggling all her different career paths and what it means to be named to our New Class.

"Obviously, it never gets old. Every day, I am shocked and surprised and so excited that anybody would want to put me in any kind of list or category as up-and-comers," she admitted. "That's the dream. I've always wanted to do this and to be recognized for something that you always want, but it's so hard to even think you can achieve. It's pretty crazy; it's surreal. Thank you!"

With regard to whether she prefers being categorized as a dancer, actress or singer, Hough said she just wants to entertain, and is taking her cue from the multitalented stars of Hollywood's Golden Age.

"The actors and entertainers from early on — the '20s and '30s and '40s — they did everything: They were singers, they were actors, they were just entertainers. And people ask me, ... 'What do you like more, if you had to choose?' And I'm like, 'I don't want to choose!' I love all of them, and each fulfills something different inside of me."

When pressed to pick an actress' career she hopes to emulate, Hough revealed she has her eyes on another recognizable blonde's ambitions.

"Reese Witherspoon: As a young actress, she was so dramatic and did these really great roles, and then definitely moved up to be America's sweetheart, so I definitely watch her career and try to make some decisions like she has."

Look out for Hough as sassy free spirit Ariel Moore in "Footloose" and in the star-studded "Rock of Ages" next summer. The triple threat said her sophomore album will be out in the near future or "when it's really ready."

Five Chapters in the Origin Story of Jessica Chastain

Filed under:

Our current Jessica Chastain era snuck up on me. Chastain's meteoric rise happened so fast that I just kind of went along with it. In other words: I was ill prepared for Chastain's dominance over the last few months. Who is this person and how did she manage to sneak up on an unsuspecting world? It might seem like Chastain -- star of 'The Help,' 'The Debt,' 'Tree of Life' and this weekend's limited release, 'Take Shelter,' plus the upcoming 'Texas Killing Fields' and 'Coriolanus' -- came out of nowhere, but that's not exactly true. Every actor has an origin, even the ones who are currently in the midst of their breakout year. So let's take a look at five early roles from Chastain, including her first on a show called 'ER.'

LeAnn Rimes on Eddie Cibrian Affair: Our Bad!

At least she's honest about it.

On The Ellen DeGeneres Show Thursday, LeAnn Rimes spoke about the controversy she generated when she began her infamous affair with Eddie Cibrian.

"It could've been handled a lot better," she says of her conduct.

LeAnn Rimes and Ellen DeGeneres

"Maybe we both didn't have the tools at the time to do it properly," she says. "But I've learned a lot. Sometimes you just want to scream. But you don't."

"We've learned to let it go and laugh at it at the end of the day."

They did get married in the end, so ... there's that.

The two were, of course, married to other people when they began dating - Rimes to Dean Sheremet and Cibrian to Brandi Glanville. But the past is the past.

LeAnn Rimes' weight also came up on the broadcast, with the singer calling fans' criticism of her slender frame disrespectful and likening it to bullying.

Angelina Jolie's French Connection!

an1_wide.jpg
Besides rounding up the kids for a play date with Kingston and Zuma (Gwen Stefani's kids), Angelina Jolie managed to get her shop on, too, while the world-traveling Jolie-Pitt clan call London home for the time being (while Brad Pitt is busy filming his latest film, World War Z, there). With her two daughters Zahara and Shiloh in tow (and an assistant and bodyguard, of course!), Angelina stopped into the French Connection store on West London's King's Road for a quick shopping spree. And, although she looked unapproachable in her usual all-black-everything attire (oversize sunglasses and all!), sources say the Oscar-winning star was super-friendly, engaging and happily posed for pictures with fans. In fact, when a shy fan asked, "Is it embarrassing if I ask for your autograph?" Angie replied, "Oh, dear, don't be silly! Of course it's not!"

Angelina's shopping trip lasted all but 20 minutes, but she managed to stock up on more than $2,000 worth of merchandise from French Connection's fall collection, including a gold pendant necklace and kids clothes (like a faux fur jacket for Zahara). When asked if she needed assistance carrying her bags to the car, the stunning star joked, "Don't worry, I have people do that for me."

Gerard Butler: "Machine Gun preacher" UK Premiere

Cleaning up quite nicely, Gerard Butler attended the UK Premiere of ?Machine Gun Preacher? at the Mayfair Hotel in London, England on Wednesday (September 28).

The ?Bounty Hunter? hunk looked dapper in a designer suit as he posed for pictures in the press area before heading inside for the film?s debut screening.

The outing comes amidst recent romance rumors which sparked after Butler attended the Los Angeles premiere of his action film and apparently got cozy with Virgin Mobile spokeswoman, Sarah Carroll.

But the ditzy blonde quickly tried to put the hookup chatter to rest, as she told Celebuzz, ?No comment on the Gerard Butler hookup. But, he was amazing in the film ?Machine Gun Preacher? and it?s totally worth seeing.?

Michael Jackson Manslaughter Trial Begins

Jury sees previously unreleased image of Jackson on gurney during opening arguments.
By Gil Kaufman

More than two years after Michael Jackson's death, the manslaughter trial of his personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, opened in a Los Angeles courtroom Tuesday (September 27).

In addition to laying out story lines the prosecution and defense teams will follow, the trial quickly provided a shocking opening chapter when prosecutor David Walgren kicked off the proceedings by showing a previously unseen, graphic image of the 50-year-old pop icon's body on a hospital gurney following his death.

According to TMZ, Walgren meticulously set out the people's case against Murray, a cardiologist who was hired by Jackson to be his personal physician in the lead-up to the "Thriller" singer's planned 50-show This Is It comeback attempt.

Walgren told the just-seated jury that Jackson put "misplaced trust" in Murray's medical skills and that the prosecution planned to show that Murray repeatedly acted with gross negligence and incompetence. He pinned the cause of death as an overdose of the powerful surgical anesthetic propofol, which he claimed was administered by Murray, who had made arrangements with a pharmacy to purchase very large quantities of the drug that chronic insomniac Jackson allegedly used to get to sleep.

In addition, Walgren said more than a month before Jackson's death, the doctor made a voice recording on his iPhone in which Jackson, heavily slurring his words, is clearly under the influence of "unknown agents," which he said proved Murray knew the star's state and what the drugs were doing to his client.

Jackson was described as cold, shivering and rambling in the weeks before his death, but Walgren said the doctor continued to give him propofol and, when Jackson was clearly struggling in his final moments, he said Murray instructed a bodyguard to hide evidence in a blue bag, including bottles of propofol. He also noted that Murray never told paramedics or doctors at UCLA hospital that he'd given Jackson propofol.

Murray, who was working on a $150,000 a month retainer, faces four years in prison and the loss of his medical license if found guilty.

Defense attorney Ed Chernoff countered by telling the jury that Jackson caused his own death by swallowing eight 2mg pills of the anti-anxiety drug Lorazepam, as well as injecting himself with a dose of propofol that instantly killed him. He said Jackson's struggles with prescription-drug abuse were so acute that no amount of determination or talent — and not even the biggest tour payday of his life — could help him mount the This Is It tour without some help.

"He died rapidly, so instantly he didn't even have time to close his eyes," Chernoff said of Jackson's quick demise from the alleged combination of tranquilizers and propofol taken without Murray's knowledge.

Chernoff also claimed that Jackson went "doctor shopping," promised to put some of Murray's former patients on the stand to show his skills and compassion as a physician (which caused Murray to tear up at one point) and said his client was not aware of how acute Jackson's issues were when he took the gig. In fact, Chernoff said, Jackson didn't have insomnia, but suffered from an "absolute, total and thorough inability to sleep."

After hiring him, Jackson allegedly told Murray he would use propofol with or without him, and in the two months that he administered the drug to the singer, Chernoff said Murray observed Jackson sleeping, waking up and living his life, which suggested to the cardiologist that it was not negligent to administer the drug to his patient.

The defense attorney also claimed Murray was trying to wean Jackson off the dangerous drug, a tactic that seemed to be working in the nights before June 25. But after an emergency meeting June 20, during which the show's promoter threatened to pull the plug on the tour if Jackson did not get his health in order, Jackson begged Murray to continue giving him the anesthetic so he could get much-needed sleep.

As he has claimed all along, Chernoff said Murray gave Jackson a small dose of propofol just before the pop star died, but not enough to kill him, suggesting that Jackson — who knew exactly how to administer the drug — shot himself up with the fatal dose. Murray pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Testimony in the proceedings — which are being televised and webcast — was expected to begin later in the day with Jackson's choreographer and friend, Kenny Ortega. Among those attending the first day of the trial were Jackson's father and mother, Joseph and Katherine Jackson, as well as siblings Janet, Jermaine, Randy, Tito and LaToya.

Is Las Vegas The 'New Ibiza'? Music, Nightlife Experts Weigh In

Electric Daisy Carnival, A-list residencies and mega-venues solidify Sin City's global appeal to dance-music community.
By Adam Stewart

Photo: Las Vegas News Bureau

For as long as most dance-music aficionados can recall, Miami has been the Stateside destination for sun, fun and the hottest music year-round. But in just a short period of time, a new player has emerged. In the blink of an eye, America's Playground has morphed into America's Dance Music Capital.

Consider the 200,000 electronica fans who descended on Las Vegas International Speedway for the Electric Daisy Carnival in June, or the billboards up and down the Strip plastered with dance-music superstars such as Tiësto, Dirty South and deadmau5. It's hard to believe that just a few years ago, Sin City catered to an entirely different scene.

"Say there are 100 clubs in Vegas: Two years ago, 90 were playing hip-hop, 10 were playing house," said Shawn Sabo, Beatport co-founder and member of the Manufactured Superstars. "But now it's completely flopped. Ten are playing hip-hop, 90 are playing house — and I really don't think it's going to stop."

With an estimated 37 million visitors hitting the Strip annually, and America's interest in the electronic dance music (EDM) scene exploding, Vegas is going pedal-to-the-metal for the dance-music craze.

"The Palms was the first major hotel/casino to have a dedicated house-music night," said Jon Gray, SVP of the N9ne Group and head of nightlife for the Palms Hotel & Casino.

It was just three short years ago, in fall 2008, that the Palms welcomed Paul Oakenfold for the city's first house-music residency, and his Planet Perfecto on Saturdays at Rain Nightclub was arguably the catalyst for the city's dance-music boom.

"Ibiza is still, first and foremost, the powerhouse for electronic music and it always will be, but you can see how Vegas has moved incredibly fast so that it's on an equal par," Oakenfold told MTV News prior to one of his legendary sets.

"The DJs used to be back in the corner and you never knew who the DJ was," the Palms' Gray added. "But now, every major nightclub has brought the DJ booth to the center of the nightclub and brought in some huge names."

Not surprisingly, DJ-centric mega-clubs exceeding 50,000 square feet or more are quickly becoming the norm, and things are just as popping in the daytime. Initially conceived at the Hard Rock's infamous Rehab Sundays in 2004, the modern Las Vegas pool party is rite of passage for the weekend warrior — and there is no shortage of options to keep even the most fickle clubber content. Thanks to recent investments and expansions such as Encore Beach, the Cosmopolitan's Marquee Day Club, Tropicana's Nikki Beach and MGM's Wet Republic, high-end pool parties have raised the bar and transformed Vegas into the premier destination for those looking to hit the increasingly popular day-club scene.

"We have bungalows with private Jacuzzis. We have an 'ultra lounge,' which holds 40 people, including its own private bar and bartender. Every bungalow has its own bathroom, and our bungalows downstairs even have their own shower. So we've really gone over the top," said Sean Christie, operating partner of Encore Beach and Surrender Nightclub.

Encore Beach and its sister clubs, Surrender and XS, play host to resident DJs Kaskade and Pete Tong, along with appearances over the summer by deadmau5, Afrojack, Skrillex, Calvin Harris and Swedish House Mafia's Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso, along with his protégé Alesso, to name just a few. Their laundry list of internationally known acts and massive events continues into the early fall.

Longtime DJ and Producer Kaskade has also taken note of the remarkable change in the tides as he rounds out his second year of residency at Encore Beach.

"This is probably the biggest and best pool party in the world," he said just prior to his set one summer afternoon. "The venue is crazy, the sound is crazy, we get four or five thousand people in here."

And just down the road, another party goes just as hard with equally big names. From Laidback Luke to Avicii, Armin Van Buuren to Cedric Gervais and Above & Beyond to LMFAO, Marquee Dayclub (and Nightclub) has no shortage of reasons for eager fans to flock by the thousands.

"Vegas is more equipped to handle the volume year-round," said Jason Strauss, owner and co-founder of the Strategic Group, the entity behind both the Lavo, Tao and Marquee franchises. "With the proliferation of casinos and all the hotel rooms, we're able to accommodate all the people that Ibiza and all of these other secondary markets can't."

Strauss and partner Noah Tepperberg ventured to up the ante with the Vegas version of Marquee Nightclub at one of the Strip's newest gems, the Cosmopolitan Hotel & Casino. Boasting nearly 3,000 guest rooms, on a typical summer weekend, many are occupied by 20- and 30-somethings for bachelor parties, girls' weekends and a zillion other reasons to head out to the clubs, blow off steam and spend some serious green.

"I've seen Las Vegas grow," DJ Cedric Gervais said. "And what [Jason] has done to Las Vegas with Marquee Nightclub is amazing — and I think Las Vegas really is becoming the new Ibiza."

"That's been my mantra for the past year," said Joel Zimmerman, U.S. head of William Morris Electronic, the partnership spawned by Pete Tong and the L.A.-based William Morris Agency. Not to be confused with the other Joel Zimmerman, a.k.a. Canadian DJ/producer deadmau5, WME's Joel is the man who many point to as a key player behind Vegas dance-music explosion and the high-end talent that has been brought in. While he's quick to point out the parallels, he noted that Vegas isn't out to take Ibiza's place in international club culture.

"I don't think we're taking people away from going to Ibiza," he said. "One's a beautiful Balearic island off the coast of Barcelona, and the other is stuck in the middle of the desert where people come to lose their minds. But the transient aspect of the island and Vegas, being a different crop of people every weekend, is very similar."

The latest statistics show tourism is up 4.9 percent year over year through July, and forecasts estimate that Labor Day weekend alone brought nearly 291,000 into town — an increase of 3.6 percent from last year. During the holiday weekend, visitors spent $178.7 million of non-gaming revenue, up an estimated 3.9 percent, versus the same weekend last summer.

While the grand totals for summer 2011 have yet to be tallied, Cathy Tull, SVP of marketing at the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority told MTV News summer 2010 brought Vegas an excess of 12.9 million visitors and took in nearly $8.3 billion in revenue. And keep in mind, these figures were for the year before Electric Daisy Carnival came to town — not bad for a desert oasis once known only for its slot machines, gentlemen's clubs and bargain buffets.

Thanks in large part to its night (and day) life, Las Vegas is an anomaly in the current economic climate, showing no signs of slowing down. Paired with America's insatiable pallet for EDM, the Las Vegas nightlife machine has undeniably proven to the rest of the world: If you build it, they will club.

'Moneyball' Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Brad Pitt baseball movie almost didn't happen.
By Eric Ditzian

As far as baseball books go, Michael Lewis' "Moneyball" isn't exactly an obvious candidate for Hollywood's adaptation machine. It's filled with geeky tales about the importance of obscure stats like "wins above replacement," the founding of fantasy sports and the evolution of a guy named Bill James from factory worker to baseball deity.

Yet at the center of the story is the quest of Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane to turn his small-market, cash-poor ballclub into a perennial champion. And it's that story that forms the heart of Brad Pitt's "Moneyball," an underdog sports narrative quite at home among its Hollywood antecedents.

It almost didn't happen. But like the 2002 A's, "Moneyball" beat the odds and landed in theaters on Friday (September 23). Here, in cheat-sheet form, is the story of how it all came to pass.

Spring Training
The adaptation came together in late 2008, with Pitt taking on the Beane role, Steve Zaillian ("Schindler's List," "Gangs of New York") signing on to pen the script and "Devil Wears Prada" helmer David Frankel attached to direct. Steven Soderbergh, though, soon stepped into the director's chair (or, at least, he planned to; there'd be more roster shakeups in "Moneyball" land before cameras rolled).

"My clearly stated goal is to set a new standard for realism in that [sports] world," Soderbergh told MTV News in the spring of '09. "I hope it sets a new standard. Hopefully, anybody who makes a sports movie from now on is going to have to grapple with this."

Struggling in the Big Leagues
Production was slated to begin that summer, but Sony, concerned about the commercial viability of Soderbergh's take, called for a directorial pinch hitter only days before the cinematic first pitch was to be thrown. Pitt remained hopeful.

"My gut says yes," Pitt told MTV News in August when asked whether "Moneyball" could see a ninth-inning rally. "[W]e're still trying to re-mount it. I hope we get to do it soon."

It took a while, but Pitt's prediction proved correct. "Capote" director Bennett Miller boarded the project that December, reportedly beating out "(500) Days of Summer" helmer Marc Webb for the gig. Aaron Sorkin rewrote the script and Jonah Hill signed on to play Beane's assistant (a role loosely based on Paul DePodesta, now a player-development exec with the New York Mets). Hill was an unexpected pick for the dramatic role, but the actor laughed with us last year that he wouldn't ruin the film.

"I earned the part," he said. "Every guy who is in their twenties and making movies was after that part, and it was a very tough thing. I'm really proud to have earned it, you know?"

Play Ball
Shooting began in the summer of '10. It'd be a full year before the first trailer for the film hit the Web. Gone was a great deal of the baseball nerdery, as well as Soderbergh's initial plan to present Bill James in the form of an animated narrator. Instead, Miller delivered a straightforward sports movie: Adversity! Triumph against the odds! More adversity!

"These are guys that are working in an unfair game," Pitt explained to us recently. "They are a team with no money trying to fight — it's David vs. Goliath. How are they going to be competitive? How are they going to stand a chance? They can't fight the other guys' fight; they're going to lose every time. These guys had to rethink it and rethink what they were doing."

Check out everything we've got on "Moneyball."

Rob Kardashian: Pushed Into The Spotlight

rob1_wide.jpg
Fans of Dancing With the Stars couldn?t help but notice how stiff and uncomfortable Rob Kardashian seemed when he made his debut on the show on Monday night. But, according to his former girlfriend, there?s a chance that his nerves were about more than a simple fear of forgetting his steps. As Rosa Acosta says, "Rob once told me that he never wants to be as famous as his sisters, but because he was born into the Kardashian name, there?s no escaping it."

Indeed, Rosa suspects that Rob?s mother/manager, Kris, pushed her son to go on the show because she was tired of the 24-year-old "living off his family?s hard-earned fame and fortune. Kim wants Rob to follow in her footsteps," Rosa explains, "and Kris wants her 10% of Rob?s paycheck!"

While Rosa?s doubtful that the show is going to turn Rob into a full-fledged star ? "He?s too immature right now to handle the pressure of the competition," she says, "and he doesn?t understand the commitment it takes," ? she says that she ultimately wouldn?t be surprised if his mother manages to wear him, and the general public, down. "That family is full of marketing monsters," she says, "who can turn anything into gold, and that?s what they?re trying to do with Rob."
