'Superman' Star Henry Cavill Had Long Road To Landing The Role

Actor has been linked to Superman reboots since 2002.

It took Henry Cavill far longer than expected to complete his journey from Krypton to Earth. Years after the British actor first circled the role of Superman, he finally landed the part of the Man of Steel in Zack Snyder's reboot of the storied comic franchise.

It was, indeed, a circuitous path for Cavill, involving brushes with other heroes and the planet's most swoon-worthy vampire. He's been this close to becoming a breakout Hollywood star a staggering number of times, but until now he was unable to seal the deal. Now his life is about to change in a big way. As we applaud Cavill for winning the part, let's take a look back at the ups and downs he endured before signing on to play the world's most iconic man in tights.

2002:
Though he was mostly known as a stage actor, Cavill's name cropped up in "Superman" conversations following director Brett Ratner's stated desire to cast an unknown in the title role of his in-the-works reboot. Ratner also had a strong interest in future "White Collar" star Matthew Bomer, but the studio pushed him in the direction of established talent like Jude Law and Josh Hartnett. It didn't matter, though: Ratner left the project early the next year.

2003:
McG came aboard to replace Ratner and began to search, like Ratner, for an unknown actor to play Superman. Cavill actually ended up landing the role.

"I was attached to the McG 'Superman' movie," he explained to MTV News in 2009. But McG's version of the film never came to pass and Cavill once again missed out on the opportunity to play the Man of Steel.

That same year, following rumors that Cavill was being considered for the role of Batman in Christopher Nolan's reboot, Christian Bale won the role of the Caped Crusader.

2004:
After McG's departure from "Superman," Bryan Singer hopped into the director's chair and targeted an unknown actor. But the actor wasn't Cavill. Instead, Brandon Routh won the lead role.

"[The McG and Singer versions] were two different movies," Cavill explained in '09. "So it wasn't so much of a sting because it was like, 'Oh, I got [the role],' and then the movie just didn't happen."

2005:
Cavill wouldn't have been faulted for avoiding any contact with iconic film characters, but he kept pushing. In '05, he screen-tested for the role of James Bond in "Casino Royale." But the part went instead to Daniel Craig, and Cavill, perhaps, was left with his confidence shaken, not stirred.

2007:
By this point, Cavill had mostly appeared in low-profile films like the direct-to-video "Hellraiser: Hellworld" and in supporting roles in higher-profile fare like "Tristan & Isolde." But the guy got a break when he was cast in the Showtime series "The Tudors," opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The series enjoyed a successful run, lasting four seasons and earning a Golden Globe nomination in 2007 for best drama.

Cavill had also reportedly been "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer's top pick to play Edward Cullen, but at the end of '07, the role went to Robert Pattinson. A few years later, we asked Cavill how close he had actually come to playing the vampire. "I've heard this, but I haven't heard from Stephenie," Cavill told us. "I haven't spoken to her personally, and I haven't spoken to the producers."

2009:
Rumor has it that Cavill was competing for the role of Hal Jordan in the long-gestating big-screen adaptation of "Green Lantern." And — surprise, surprise — after losing out on Batman and Superman, Cavill failed to land the role. Instead, Ryan Reynolds signed on to play Jordan.

2011:
At long, long last, the guy who missed out on playing some of pop culture's best known characters officially signs on to play Superman.

"In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen," Snyder said in a statement. "I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield."

Saigon Finally Tells The Greatest Story Never Told

'This album is my offering to hip-hop,' he tells Mixtape Daily of long-awaited debut.

Street King: Saigon

Holding It Down For: Mooseknuckle to Brownsville

Independent LP: The Greatest Story Never Told

Real Spit: "This ain't about a mixtape, this is about my story," Saigon, a Mixtape Daily favorite, told us when we asked him about his upcoming project. "I know you know me from the mixtapes, but this is the album, the debut."

Pardon the intensity, but our Brooklyn brother has been hard at work on this project for more than a few years, and his labor of love is just weeks away from finally seeing the light of day.

"This album is my offering to hip-hop," Sai said. "There's no jumping from story to story. It's put together like a story, from start to beginning. And I think it's a great piece of work that people are gonna appreciate."

The New York rhyme spitter has a tale that's as in-depth as his poetics on wax. He was one of the Big Apple's finest upstarts in years and inked a deal with Atlantic Records. He later raged against the machine, however, with his blistering "Trans-Atlantic Slave Deal" when he felt he was being pushed to deliver pop hits and later parted ways with the label. On February 15, the rapper will finally release a collective of material that showcases his full range of skills, from his booming voice, passionate delivery and lively topical offerings.

After delivering a couple of warning shots, Saigon is in storytelling mode now.

Joints to Check For

» "The Greatest Story Never Told." "That actually breaks down the album," Sai explained of the Just-Blaze-produced number. "That's why I thought it should be first. But master Just Blaze decided it shouldn't. You know when you read the book and you have the table of contents? That song is the table of contents of my album."

"I was waiting, just took a minute to breathe," Sai spits. "Even squeezed off a Warning Shot/ Mooseknuckle to Brownsville, they impatiently waiting for your boy to drop/ Lo and behold, The Greatest Story Never Told, chapter one, verse one, the genesis of my scroll."

» "It's Cold." "This might be the coldest winter in New York I ever seen. That song is a metaphor. I didn't realize it would be this cold when I wrote the song. I had no clue it would snow every day. But the song is a metaphor saying: 'We live in a cold world.' "

"My mama with my grandmother now, I wonder what they saying when they looking down," he raps. "Wonder if I made them proud?/ I made it this far, I wonder if that made them smile."

Jesse Eisenberg Was 'Great' On 'SNL,' 'Social Network' Co-Star Says

Armie Hammer tells MTV News at the SAG Awards it was 'funny' to see Eisenberg onstage with Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg.

Oscar front-runner "The Social Network" didn't exactly paint the most flattering picture of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, but the young billionaire proved he can take a joke when he turned up alongside Jesse Eisenberg on "Saturday Night Live" this weekend.

Facebook's CEO wasn't the only one who watched Eisenberg host "SNL."

"I saw the whole episode! I thought it was great!" exclaimed "Social Network" co-star Armie Hammer when MTV News caught up with him at the 17th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (January 30). Thanks to director David Fincher and some subtle special effects, Hammer portrayed both Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, the athletic Harvard twins who hired Zuckerberg to create a social-networking site and later sued him for millions. "It was so funny to see [Jesse] and Mark [together]."

Hammer was at the Director's Guild Awards on Saturday when he received a picture to his phone of the pair standing onstage together in Studio 8H at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, the famous location where "SNL" has taped since 1975. Hammer said he did a double-take.

"I was like, 'What the hell?' " he recalled with a broad smile. "I was like, 'Oh my gosh! It's the two of them!' "

Zuckerberg has expressed reservations about some aspects of the movie, which won the award for Best Drama at the Golden Globes earlier this month. The movie also nabbed awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Composer (Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor with Atticus Ross) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin) at the 16th annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards.

Fincher, Sorkin and the cast have acknowledged that the movie is a somewhat fictionalized account of the rise of the omnipresent website: a true-life tale that severed friendships and has been the subject of many lawsuits between former co-workers who claim they were unfairly stiffed of their piece of the pie.

The Academy Awards has 10 Best Picture nominees: "Black Swan," "The Fighter," "Inception," "The Kids Are All Right," "The King's Speech," "127 Hours," "Toy Story 3," "True Grit," "Winter's Bone" and "The Social Network." Most pundits predict a hotly contested race between "the Facebook movie" and "The King's Speech," which took the best film ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards as well as the best actor prize for its lead, Colin Firth.

Tracy Morgan Gives Shout-Out to Kidney Donor, Calls Sarah Palin World's Hottest MILF

Tracy Morgan gave shout-outs to some important people last night.

On the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild awards, the 30 Rock star first thanked his ex-girlfriend, Tanisha Hall, "for donating my kidney to me."

Even though they broke up, the pair remains close. "We were together, but then we separated," Morgan told E! News. "But she also gave me a kidney."

That was nice of Tracy. Of course, then he had to make things awkward with his second bizarre outburst about Sarah Palin in less than a week.

Tracy Morgan on the Red Carpet

As Guiliana Rancic and the cameras started panning away, Morgan proclaimed, "Sarah Palin, you're the hottest MILF in the world! She's a MILF!"

Yeah. Don't even ask. This is Tracy Morgan. Logic and reasoning do not apply.

"MILF" isn't as bad as the type of "material" he dubbed her last week at least.

Sundance Video: 5 Minutes with HitFix Film Critic Drew McWeeny

Not long after watching our final film of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival (which was the excellent 'Sound of My Voice' -- read our review here), we sat down with our good pal Drew McWeeny of HitFix.com to do a sort of 5-minute lightning round re-capping the best (and worst) of this year's festival.

Many of you may already be familiar with McWeeny, who began long ago at a little website called Ain't It Cool News. The man is a hard worker, has a ridiculous amount of film knowledge (and tidbits) tucked away somewhere in his brain, and is one of the most passionate film writers working today. In the video after the jump, we discuss Drew's best and worst of the fest, as well as what the heavy 2011 Sundance themes of religious fanatics and the end of the world will mean for our movie watching in the coming year.

Check out our full coverage from the 2011 Sundance Film Festival

50 Cent has invaded Hollywood with a string of roles alongside Tinseltown royalty like Al Pacino and Robert De Niro ("Righteous Kill") and leading-man-in-the-making Chace Crawford ("Twelve").

We all know that the G-Unit General can make a hit, but after he and producer Randall Emmett inked a reported $200 million deal to launch Cheetah Films, don't be surprised if the rapper's future lies in making fans sit down to watch him on the big screen instead of hitting the dance floor.

He hasn't left New York for the West Coast just yet, but Terrence Howard said 50 is a more than capable actor. The two worked together on Fif's first film, "Get Rich or Die Tryin'." And according to the veteran actor ("Hustle & Flow," "Crash," "Ray"), he actually learned more from 50 than the other way around.

"One of the things that I learned, the hardest thing to do is be still," Howard explained. "When you don't know what to do, be still. He mastered that. And therefore, when he jumped forward and has something to say, he spoke the truth with it. That's a genius. That's what makes great film work. He was there from the beginning. I actually learned more from watching him, 'cause he taught me to be still."

In addition to his film ventures and wrapping his next album, 50 Cent recently joined Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the Sundance Film Festival for the launch of the boxer's Mayweather Productions.

Taraji P. Henson Gets FAB On "Chelsea Lately"

Taraji P. Henson was red-hot on last night's "Chelsea Lately."  She hit up Ms. Handler's couch for some chit-chat about her fab new nude PETA ad, her new Lifetime movie, and how bad she needs a real man.

Read on for the video clip....

As for the reason she decided to do a tv movie, Taraji says this was a "full circle" moment for her as Lifetime gave her her first shot at acting. She played a cop on the show "Division" years ago.

The fabulous Ms. Henson rocked a red mini dress to show of her gams and sparkly Louboutins.  After showing her naked PETA ad, she and Chelsea discussed why Taraji can't find a man and she listed off her requirements: tall, can protect her, and isn't a boy hidden in a man's body.  WORD.

Peep the vid.  Her Lifetime movie, "Taken From Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story," premieres Monday, January 31st.

SAG Awards Set Designer Says Show's Vibe Will Be 'Elegant'

Joe Stewart tells MTV News that Sunday night's festivities will look 'beautiful.'
By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Kelly Marino

At Sunday night's SAG Awards, Hollywood's best and brightest will be lauded by their peers. And it's up to the show's production designer, Joe Stewart, to make sure that this year's winners collect their hardware in a venue that is as spiffy as humanly possible.

Stewart spoke to MTV News on Friday while preparations at the Shrine were well underway, and broke down the glamorous atmosphere of the production.

"This year, what we wanted to do was have a beautiful, elegant environment," he said. "The vibe of this show is always pretty elegant — because first of all, I mean, you're at an awards show; the attendees and the recipients are always wearing gowns and tuxedos. It's a black-tie event, so you always have to have a set that ... people can settle into and look good. So this set is supposed to be a sort of swell interior where ladies in gowns can look at home."

Setting up a venue worthy of a televised, A-list trophy handout takes planning, and Stewart said that putting the look of the event together took months.

"We prepare for this show in advance quite a while. I think that we started working on this in October, maybe even September with the preliminary conceptual ideas to get us going," he said. "It's a committee, we all have to get together, find time and meet and sooner or later we come to a consensus and start the work."

Outfitting the legendary event space with a glitzy look appropriate enough for SAG nominees like Natalie Portman and Nicole Kidman to sashay into is no easy task. However, Stewart pointed out that the space not only has to appear super glam, but the room also has to be transformed into a top-tier set able to accommodate a live coast-to-coast broadcast of the ceremony.

"Always, the challenging part of this is the space," he said. "There's a transformation that happens in this space. We completely black it out and then rig it, and the rigging you can see above head is how we hang everything up. And we basically take a room that isn't supposed to be a television studio or a theater and turn it into a glamorous event. But it has to function and have all the whistles and bells that a television studio would have and catering an event."

After months of planning, Stewart's job will finally wrap up Sunday when the show airs. While he admitted that handing over his handiwork to the stage managers makes him "pace backstage," Stewart revealed the special way he gets to indulge in the excitement of the evening.

"I get a little place backstage and I can see and congratulate winners, and I really enjoy doing that," he smiled. "When they come off the stage it's fabulous."

One of the most enjoyable online trends of the past year for those of us who love both movies and graphic novels has been the release of free, high quality supplemental comics that add to, not recap, the movie's story. The best of these so far has been the 'Inception: The Cobol Job' prequel comic, but the newly released 'True Grit: Mean Business' is no slouch, either.

Artist Chris Wildgoose says he was "pretty gobsmacked and giddy" when approached by Paramount to do a comic after he posted a sketch of Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn on his blog. "It all sort of happened quite quickly, within a week of being asked I was sat in the Paramount offices for a meeting with some more sketches and test pages and given a screening of the film! Then I was pretty much given the word go to do the whole thing."

'TG:MB' is more than just a fun, rewarding read. Yes, the art looks great, and the wide, horizontal panels work well for the digital medium, especially if you're trying to read it on a small monitor. But 'Mean Business' reinterprets Rooster Cogburn.

In the comic, he is introduced on the stand during the trial of Odus Wharton, the only member of the Wharton boys to survive the shoot-out with Cogburn and Marshal Potter. We follow Cogburn to the shoot-out, where he righteously kills Odus' two brothers; it's a complete depature from the scene in the Oscar-nominated movie where the fight occurs offscreen and Cogburn's version of events are depicted as possible lies.

The 24-page comic can be read for free on Comixology, and excerpt that features Rooster getting the drop on the Wharton boys awaits you after the jump. You can see more of Chris Wildgoose's work on his blog.

What do you think of this cleaner, less morally ambiguous version of Rooster Cogburn? Let us know in the comments.

Terrence Howard Says He Picked Up Acting Tips From 50 Cent

'I actually learned more from watching him,' the 'Get Rich or Die Tryin' ' actor tells Mixtape Daily.

Celebrity Favorites: Terrence Howard

Call Her "Ms. Hill": Lauryn Pulls A Diva Move At Sundance + Naomi Campbell's Perjury In Perfume Trial

Apparently Lauryn Hill isn't the easiest artist to deal with as folks from Sundance are talking about her diva behavior, which includes making EVERYONE address her as "Ms. Hill."  Get the deets inside plus a status update on Naomi Campbell's perfume trial which isn't going in her favor...

In addition to starting shows late, seeming disconnected from the audience, and eccentric outfits, Lauryn Hill pulled a "Diana Ross" move in Sundance demanding that everyone address her as "Ms. Hill."

L-Boogie's management warned staffers at Harry O's in Park City, Utah, that she was only to be addressed as "Ms. Hill" during her Wednesday night performance.

"Everyone sort of rolled their eyes and chuckled but promised to oblige," said a source.

Once she hit the stage, she played for two hours with an 11-piece band. And fans got their monies worth good because Harry O's Konstantine Deslis said, "She put on the best show I've seen in six years."

We're actually not mad at the Ms. Hill demand.  But if she starts the whole "Don't look directly into my eyes" thing....

In supermodel news...

Naomi Campbell is in danger of being charged with perjury in her perfume trial.  Naomi's former agent, Carole White, claims Na, her manager, and her lawyer lied under oath to avoid losing a $10 million suit over Naomi's perfume royalties.

Carole is suing Ms. Campbell for allegedly reneging on a perfume deal. Although Naomi said Carole overstated her involvement with the fragrance, Carole has offered a recording of a 2006 meeting about the deal, which she says proves Naomi and her lawyer lied.

Yesterday, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Judith Gische called the allegations "serious," but said she will give the Campbell legal team an opportunity to defend themselves before she decides whether to refer them to the district attorney and charge them with perjury.

As for a statement from the supermodel, her lawyer "categorically" denied the allegations on behalf of everyone involved.  This chick stays caught up in some mess doesn't she?

SAG Awards Seating Chart: Where 'Glee' Sits Next To 'True Grit'

For Sunday's awards show, producer explains science behind celebrity seating.
By Kelly Marino

SAG Awards producer Kathy Connell

LOS ANGELES — The Screen Actors Guild Awards are coming up on Sunday, and preparations are already well under way at the Shrine Auditorium. The stage is coming together, the list of presenters is close to being finalized and, most importantly, the seating arrangements are being mapped out.

"It depends on the size of the cast," SAG Awards producer Kathy Connell explained when MTV News asked how the seating chart is determined. "It also depends on if they were here the year before. If the TV cast was down front, we are probably going to put them further back this year. We also try to be democratic between film and TV."

The ceremony will take place in an intimate dinner setting where both film and TV actors will be seated next to their peers. Throughout the show, the celebrities can nosh on food provided by Lucques Catering and sip on Dry Creek wine and Taittinger Champagne while they celebrate one another's work.

The Guild seats the film casts next to the TV casts in order to allow everyone to visit and mingle in between acts. For example, the first few tables located in the front of the venue have place cards for the cast of "True Grit" seated next to the cast of "Glee." Moving more toward the center of the room reveals the actors of "The Kids Are All Right" seated next to the guys from "30 Rock." And a quick look around the rest of the room shows the ensemble from "The Closer" seated next to "Modern Family," who are across from the cast of "The Fighter" and "Hot in Cleveland."

"Actors are actors. They don't care that they are on TV. In fact, you know, film actors are very, very fond of watching actors on TV and vice versa," Connell said.

The 17th annual SAG Awards will air live on TNT and TBS this Sunday at 8p.m. ET from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Lunch Break: 'It's Showtime' Supercut -- Eddie Murphy Is the MVP of Cliche Movie Lines

Filed under:

Lunch Break is a daily column on Moviefone that brings you the best viral topics and videos on the Internet each day. Check back every day at 12:30 for more Lunch Break goodies.

If you repeat a word enough times, it stops having any meaning. It just devolves into a mess of noises coming out of your mouth, sounding like some sort of alien gibberish.

And now thanks to the latest supercut from editor Harry Hanrahan (the man who made 'Nicolas Cage Losing His S***'), the phrase 'It's showtime!' no longer has any linguistic meaning to us.

We went into this three-minute supercut of people from various movies using the phrase 'It's showtime!' thinking it would be a hilarious takedown of the one of the most cliche movie lines, finally putting that tired phrase out to pasture. And we got that, but we also came away with another valuable lesson: Eddie Murphy needs to fire his agent.

(Slightly NSFW video after the cut.)

Nicole Kidman, Jon Hamm And More Added As SAG Awards Presenters

Jason Bateman, Jeremy Renner, Sofia Vergara and Robin Wright were also added for Sunday's awards show.

In addition to the star power of the nominees, the Screen Actors Guild Awards have enlisted an equally high-caliber roster of presenters for Sunday night's show — many of whom are also SAG nominees.

On Thursday (January 27), Jason Bateman, Jon Hamm, Nicole Kidman, Jeremy Renner, Sofia Vergara and Robin Wright were announced as presenters, joining the previously announced Scott Bakula, Alec Baldwin, Jeff Bridges, Tim Conway, Rosario Dawson, Josh Duhamel, Angie Harmon, Eva Longoria, Cory Monteith, Amy Poehler, Hilary Swank, Betty White and SAG President Ken Howard.

For those still reeling from the Golden Globe ceremony and Oscar nominations, prepare yourselves for another star-studded awards show. The 17th annual SAG Awards will air live on TNT and TBS on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET from the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles. The SAG Awards are the only televised awards shows to exclusively honor performers, presenting 13 awards for acting in film and television.

This year, the big nominees in film are also Oscar nominees, including "The King's Speech" and "The Fighter." In television, "Modern Family," "Glee" and "30 Rock" lead the comedy categories, while "Mad Men" and "Boardwalk Empire" lead in drama.

Ernest Borgnine will receive this year's lifetime-achievement award, which was given to Betty White at last year's ceremony following a comical speech by her "Proposal" co-star and eventual SAG Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock. "Seventy-one years ago when I signed on to an experimental thing called television," White said of her career, "I never would have expected it to culminate in an evening like this."

Stick with MTV News for SAG Awards coverage throughout the weekend and from the red carpet on Sunday night!

Little monsters give high marks to upcoming single's lyrics, with one calling singer 'our generation's John Lennon.'

Lady Gaga's little monsters seem to love the lyrics to "Born This Way," which the singer released in full on Thursday. Gaga sings about equality and love, and it's that message that her fans are relating to most.

"This is awesome! I love it. She sings about equality for not only gays, lesbians, transgenders, etc., but for people of all races," Lucy wrote on MTV.com. "She's like our generation's John Lennon."

Booklady added, "I love it and I can't wait to hear it! Definitely powerful and resonant in times like these."

Gaga, who recently told Ellen DeGeneres that she'll be performing the song at the Grammy Awards, has fans going crazy to hear the final version of the track. Ryan wrote, "I love it. Can't wait till Feb. 13. Gaga is going 2 sing it! Can't wait till I hear it with rhythm and her voice. Baby I was born this way."

"It's official. SHE'S A LEGEND!!!" Chifi55 wrote about the track, which was written and co-produced by Gaga with production help from Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow.

"Gorgeous, beautiful," Fame Monster said of the lead single off Gaga's May album of the same name. "Will win song of the year at 2012 Grammys."

dQuiggz continued that "Lady Gaga is on her way to inspiring world peace, one sequin at a time. ... These lyrics are beautiful, original, and are something that anybody and everybody can relate to."

"I LOVE IT!!! Goosebumps," Francesco wrote. "It's not just about the lgbt community, it's about human beings and how we are born the way we are."

Even music lovers who aren't little monsters seem to be appreciating what Gaga is saying in the song. Irene noted, "I'm not a huge Gaga fan, but I'm for anyone willing to spread a message of peace. I'll take it. Effort-FTW."

What do you think of the "Born This Way" lyrics? Tell us in the comments!

Time After Time: Movies from 1971

We're back in our time machine with the broken dial, and this time we land in 1971.

What Was the Story?

Good old Richard Nixon was in the White House at the time, and his Watergate scandal was still a ways off. Hippie culture was everywhere, including long hair, bell-bottom jeans, flip-flops, huge sunglasses (wait... that sounds a bit like 2009). If you walked into a record store, you could buy -- on vinyl -- such gems as Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," Led Zeppelin's fourth album, Joni Mitchell's "Blue," The Who's "Who's Next," John Lennon's "Imagine," Sly and the Family Stone's "There's a Riot Goin' On" and the Rolling Stones' "Sticky Fingers." And a young kid called Elton John released his first single, "Your Song," thus ensuring himself a future recording bland songs for movies in 2011.

Rachel Zoe Reveals Her Pregnancy Cravings at a Fashionable Bash With New Designer Sofia Vergara

Rachel Zoe threw on a Ports 1961 dress last night to attend Elle's Women in TV dinner at LA's Soho House, hosted by Joe Zee, with her adorable husband Rodger Berman. The super stylist was joined on the red carpet by How I Met Your Mother's Cobie Smulders, and a curve-showing Sofia Vergara, who just revealed that she's designing a line for K-Mart. True Blood's Sam Trammell balanced out the ladies, as did Sofia's Modern Family costar Jesse Tyler Ferguson. The celebs all mingled inside, and Sofia snapped a photo of her good times with Sam and Jesse. Rachel, meanwhile, dished about the foods she's loving while pregnant. She said, "I really enjoy things that are tart, like strawberries and grapefruit. . . Sour things like that, but nothing really weird."

The Office, "The Seminar": Best Lines of the Night

This week's episode of The Office definitely had its moments, but this will probably forever be known as "the one with Ricky Gervais." The show's creator stopped in during the cold open as his UK Office character David Brent, in what was undoubtedly the most memorable moment of the evening. Not that the rest of the half hour didn't have its merits.

Andy is planning a small business seminar, and he recruits his fellow employees to help with a few presentations. Jim declines after a childhood friend unexpectedly appears, then Dwight, Phyllis, and Stanley also back out. As a result, Andy has to call in for backup: Kevin, Kelly, Ryan, and Creed. Though they may lack public speaking skills, they make up for it with plenty of passion! Meanwhile, Michael is doing a little strategizing of his own. He creates a fake Greek persona, "Mykonos," as a way to generate interest in Andy's seminar and to win Holly back. There's also a heated Scrabble game between Gabe and Erin, although the only words Erin can think up are animal-related.

I chuckled throughout the episode, so let's take a look at some of the best quotes. I've listed a handful of my favorites when you read more.

  • Dwight: "You promised us whales, these are worms."
Andy: "They're not worms, Dwight. They're just people with tiny businesses. They're baby whales, which is even cuter."
  • "The winner gets to pick the movie we watch. I have won no games. So far, I've seen The Shining, Rosemary's Baby, The Ring - not really my thing. Although, I do like the early parts of the movies where they have a perfect family and everything." - The always cheery Erin, explaining her Scrabble game with Gabe
  • "There are some people who have charm, and some people who don't. Guess which type I am? Charm type." -Kevin, who tries his best to give a rousing presentation, beginning with Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train"
  • "It is important to brand yourself, so I have a couple of things in the works: the business bitch, the diet bitch, the shopping bitch, the etiquette bitch." - Kelly, who clearly has more business savvy than anyone gives her credit for
  • "Two eyes, two ears, a chin, a mouth, ten fingers, two nipples, a butt, two knee caps, a penis. I have just described to you the loch ness monster, and the award for his capture? All the riches in Scotland. So I have one question: why are you here?" - Creed, giving his motivational speech to the seminar's students
  • "Where's your jet pack, Zuckerberg?" - Jim's childhood friend, Tom, ridiculing Jim for calling him dumb when they were kids (nice Facebook/Social Network reference!)

What did you think of the episode? Are you happy with how The Office is performing in 2011? Did you want to see more Ricky Gervais? Talk it out below or head over to The Office community group to chat more!

Chris Medina's 'American Idol' Story Recalls Danny Gokey's

Mother of Medina's fiancé says 'Idol' hopeful has 'risen from a crisis to be a hero.'
By Gil Kaufman

Chris Medina performs on "American Idol" on Wednesday
Photo: FOX

Astute "American Idol" observers may have noticed an interesting story arc on Wednesday night's two-hour audition episode. Though it was not commented on during the show, the tryouts in Milwaukee had a dramatic subplot that united an aspiring "Idol" and a former top finisher through their mutual grief over personal tragedies.

When bespectacled church crooner Danny Gokey sang his way into the top three on season eight of "Idol," the heartbreaking story of his young wife's death from a congenital heart disease just weeks before his audition for the show was a frequently discussed part of his "Idol" biography.

During Wednesday's show, in which Gokey was seen giving his hometown aspirants some encouragement as they waited in line for their turns to sing, we also met another unassuming sweetheart of a guy struggling with a tragic backstory involving his beloved.

Chicagoan Chris Medina, 26, melted hearts in his show-ending audition with the story about his longtime love, Juliana Ramos, and the car accident that forever changed their lives. After eight years together, Medina proposed to his girlfriend two years ago and the couple planned to wed soon after. A short time later, though, she was in a car accident that left her with a traumatic brain injury and in a coma that doctors didn't think she'd wake from.

She did, though, and Medina has stood by her side, helping to take care of her along with Ramos' mother and wearing her engagement ring on a chain around his neck. He sang the Script's "Breakeven," an emotional song with lyrics about heartbreak, including the lines, "Well I'm still alive, but I'm barely breathing/ I pray to a God that I don't believe in/ ... When a heart breaks, no, it don't break even/ ... I'm fallin' to pieces." The performance was so moving that it garnered some props not only from the judges, but from Script guitarist Mark Sheehan, who tweeted his support for Medina after the show.

USA Today dug up a video that Ramos made on what would have been the couple's wedding day, in which Chris can be heard playing "What Has Become of Me," a song he wrote during Juliana's long hospital stay. "Instead of saying my vows today I decided it would be nice to share this song with you guys," he said in the video. "I bottomed out/ I'm holding on to anything/ A beating heart/ I've come to see it's paramount/ I'm giving all I've got to give to set you free/ More than a vow, through thick and thin," he sings in his keening falsetto over a gently picked acoustic guitar, promising to guide his love home even as he questions how the accident has thrown his life into turmoil.

And, like Gokey, Oak Forest, Illinois, barista Medina was an aspiring singer well before he took his story to "Idol." While Danny mostly used his pipes to sing worship songs as part of the Faith Builders International Ministry in Beloit, Wisconsin, and Milwaukee, Medina rocked it out with his unsigned Fall Out Boy-esque indie band the Able Body.

Gokey's wife had died by the time he was on "Idol," so the foundation he set up in her honor helps other families in need. But because he's still dealing with the costs of her treatment, Medina is raising money for the Juliana Recovery Fund through the Laurus Foundation.

He's also getting major support and props from Juliana's mother, who maintains a Facebook blog updating her daughter's progress. "Can you believe it? There are just no words," she wrote Thursday (January 27) after the previous night's emotional scene. The day before, she blogged about how good things can happen when people get together and send their positive thoughts.

"I will keep this brief (for once) because you see I have a daughter healing from a brain injury who is a bit excited today and I want to share that excitement with her," she wrote before the episode aired. "There is a man in our lives that has risen from a crisis to be a hero. You know that already because I have said it a hundred times in a hundred ways through this blog. Our very own Chris Medina has spent days and nights, losing blood, sweat and oh yes A LOT of tears to beg his fiancé back to health. And through it all he has become deeper, more centered, and an even more soulful individual. This has been witnessed by all of us from his mannerisms to his music. If you didn't love him before, you do now. If you DID love him, you now adore him ... I just want to say... Tonight's gonna be a good, good night!"
