Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin Ready for 'Gangster Squad'

Hollywood and gangland -- a marriage made in heaven (both onscreen and off).

According to Deadline, Warner Bros has begun negotiating with Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin to star in 'Gangster Squad,' its portrait of a crime-fighting squad going after gangsters in Los Angeles in the 1950s and 60s, including Mickey Cohen, a rough and tumble member of the mob who had ties to Meyer Lansky and Bugsy Siegel and palled around with Los Angeles celebrities during that era.

Deadline broke the story last month that the studio had offered two of the main roles to Penn and Gosling, and now has confirmed that Penn is in talks to play Cohen and Gosling and Brolin are in talks to play two cops assigned to bring him down.

The film, based on a series of articles by Paul Lieberman and scripted by ex-South Central L.A. cop Will Beall, will be directed by 'Zombieland' helmer Ruben Fleischer. Production will begin in the fall.
